Membership
In order to work as a Medical Scientist in Ireland, an application must be submitted to the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS) for eligibility for membership. Candidates must hold an honours degree in a science course approved by the Academy. To gain such approval the course must contain a significant Biomedical Science component in the syllabus/course content. In addition to academic qualifications, candidates also need at least one year's structured training in a suitable Medical laboratory in order to get eligibility for membership of the AMLS.
Students who have completed the degree programme (with integrated training) from Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) should submit applications using Form 1 below.
Applicants with both academic (non-standard) and experiential background (at least one year’s structured training in a Medical Laboratory) may complete Form 2 below and submit to AMLS with requested documentation and fee. Please note that ‘Research/Laboratory Aide/Assistant’ experience will not suffice.
Upgrade to Fellowship
This is an opportunity for those who are already members to submit application for an Upgrade to Fellowship of the Academy (FAMLS) and is free of charge. Candidates who have accumulated 2+ years AMLS membership but who have lapsed with their subscription, may apply for Eligibility for Fellowship on payment of €100. An MSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent) forms the criteria for this category. Candidates for both Eligibility/Upgrade to Fellowship may complete Form 4 below.
Student membership
Fulltime students from DIT, CIT/UCC and GMIT undertaking the Degree in Biomedical Science, can apply for student membership free of charge. Students from these programmes carrying out a whole-time MSc and PhD can also submit application for Student Membership using Form 5 below.
Non-EU Applicants
Applicants with non-EU qualifications must apply to NQAI (National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) in order to determine if their qualifications are comparable to a Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree in Ireland. NQAI can be contacted at Qualification Recognition Ireland (email: info@qualificationsrecognition.ie, tel: +353 1 887 1500). When this ruling has been returned to you, please post NQAI ruling, together with completed application and fee to ourselves; AMLS, 31 Old Kilmainham, Dublin 8, Ireland.
Payments
Payment can be made by cheque, bank draft (in favour of AMLS) or credit card. Alternatively, overseas applicants may arrange to pay through a friend or colleague who is already resident in Ireland and who may be in a position to pay on their behalf. We do not arrange bank transfers.
Membership Meetings
The Membership Committee of the AMLS meet once monthly (except August) and examine all applications.
